The Lady Saints jumped all over the Lady Rams early in the first set taking a 13-5 lead. Texas Wesleyan seemed to play on their heels for most of the set and could not produce any offense, taking 24 swings, eight for points, seven for errors. Three of those attacking error were the last three points for Our Lady of the Lake to take a 25-12 game one win.

The second set proved to be a closer game, as the score was tied six times in the first 22 points. The Lady Saints were able to maintain a slight lead until a double block by Meghan Finley and Katherine Rosenbusch tied the game again at 17-17. Wesleyan battled to keep the game close, but two late kills from Liza Rodriguez game OLLU a 25-22 win and 2-0 match lead.

With the Lady Ram backs against the wall and the Lady Saints thinking about an easy win, Texas Wesleyan controlled the third set. The Lady Rams forced errors and found the open floor on swings, rocketing out to a 17-7 lead. Texas Wesleyan was able to capitalize on 15 Lady Saint errors, while Alex Hendee and Finley combined for seven kills to help Wesleyan to a 25-16 third set win.

The Lady Saint errors continued in the fourth set, allowing the Lady Rams to go on a 6-0 run early. A few Wesleyan errors gave OLLU the room to take a slight lead capped by a Jennifer Herrera kill that gave the Lady Saints a 20-17 lead. The Lady Rams went on a 4-0 run that included a Bailey Bunting kill to give Wesleyan a 21-20 lead. Jordan Latham tied the set at 21-21 with a kill, but the Lady Rams finished strong nabbing a 25-21 fourth set win to force a game five.

Errors plagued the Lady Rams, allowing OLLU to take a 9-5 lead in the fifth set. The Lady Rams battled, but the Lady Saints kept the lead to end the comeback with a 15-11 win.

“Not our best day,” said head coach Christy Clawson. “We got behind early and even though we battled back to force a fifth set, we couldn’t keep our mental focus when it mattered the most. We knew we were the better team, we just didn’t show it.”

Hendee and Bunting led the Rams with 10 kills each. Angelica Arroyo posted 39 assists. Marissa Rangel had 19 digs in the match.

The Lady Rams are back in action on Friday, October 21 as they travel to Tyler, TX to take on Texas College at 7:00 p.m.
