FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (3-2) went 1-2 in Friday's action at the Cowtown Classic. The Lady Rams won 14-4 verses Sterling College (0-1) before dropping a game to Baker University (1-3) 3-0. Wesleyan dropped their last game of the day 6-2 to Evangel University at the Cowtown Classic on Friday.
In the game against Sterling College, the Lady Warriors struck first in the top of the first with a Lassiter RBI base hit that scored two to give the Lady Warriors an early 2-0 lead.
The Lady Rams retaliated quickly with three runs from the heart of the lineup. Christina Kelley knocked in a run with a base hit to left field. Lindsay Cline smacked one to right center to drive in a run, and Haley Butler hit a laser down the left field line to give the Lady Rams a 3-2 lead after one inning. Wesleyan put two more runs on the board in the second inning with a Lady Warrior miscue that scored Marissa Rangel and another Cline RBI to bring the score to a 5-2 Lady Ram advantage.
The Lady Warriors made a run with back to back RBI singles in the top of the third to tighten the lead to 5-4 Wesleyan. The Lady Rams extended the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the third with a two run homer from Rangel over the center field fence.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kelley smashed a solo home run to left and Butler crushed a homer to center to take a 10-4 lead. The Lady Rams kept the heat on with an RBI double from Kelley and a homer by Cline to give Wesleyan a 14-4 run-rule win after five innings.
Cline led the Lady Rams and went 4-for-4 with five RBI. Kelley went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Butler went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win.
In the game versus Baker, the Lady Rams and the Lady Wildcats both played stout defense playing five and two thirds scoreless innings.
The Texas Wesleyan defense slipped in the top of the sixth when a catcher’s error from a throw to home plate allowed the Lady Wildcats to score off of single to left field. Baker University scored again off of another RBI single to give the Lady Wildcats a 2-0 lead. A passed ball allowed another run to cross the plate and Baker took a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh inning.
The Lady Rams were not able to make the comeback, taking their first loss of the season falling 3-0.
Taylor Hodge (1-1) picked up the loss despite throwing four perfect innings; she pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits (none earned), while allowing no walks and striking out four.
In the game against Evangel, Wesleyan took advantage of a distracted defense as Rangel picked up two bases on a base hit bunt. She moved to third on the grounder, and scored on an error off of a failed pickoff attempt to give Wesleyan an early 1-0 lead.
Evangel took a 2-1 lead with a two out, two run homer to center from Billings in the bottom of the first. Evangel extended the lead in the bottom of the third with a score off a grounder and a home run to center, giving the Crusaders a 4-1 advantage.
The Lady Rams got one run back on a Raven Moreno RBI single to left field to shorten the lead to 4-2 Lady Eagles, but could not overcome the deficit and fell to the Crusaders 6-2.
Moreno went 2-for-3 with a RBI, while Rangel and Hopie Perez both went 1-for-3 with a run scored each.
Ashley Tarrant (1-1) picked up the loss giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits. She had one walk and seven strikeouts in the effort.
The Lady Rams will play tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. when they take on Graceland University in the first round of bracket play.
