FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (5-5, 3-3 RRAC) picked up a 1-0 win in the finale of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series with UT-Brownsville (10-2, 8-1) on Saturday.
The Rams flashed some leather, turning a pair of double plays behind three Texas Wesleyan pitchers to keep the game scoreless into the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth inning,
Taylor Jockers recorded Texas Wesleyan’s third hit against UTB starter Mitch Schaafsma. Jockers singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two down in the inning,
Charles Tabone came through with a run-scoring double off the left field wall.
Mendoza threw to one batter in the ninth before being relieved by
Patrick Stanley who nailed down his third save of the season.
Mendoza (1-1) allowed just one hit and a walk in two innings of work to earn the win. Schaafsma (3-1) tossed eight innings, allowing a run on four hits and two walks while striking out six.
Tabone went 2-for-4 with a double and the only RBI of the game.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Stephenville, TX, to take on Tarleton State University. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
