BELTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (2-1) took a convincing 10-1 win at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (0-1) on Tuesday.
The Rams got on the board first with a two-run single from
Jason Holmes in the second inning. Texas Wesleyan added an RBI single from
Eric Epperson in the third to push the score to 3-0.
Meanwhile
Derek Vaughn did not allow a hit while striking out striking out four and walking three before being relieved by
Daniel Milliman in the third inning.
After Milliman breezed through a perfect third, the Rams broke the game open with a three-run fourth. Texas Wesleyan got doubles from
Charles Tabone and Holmes and RBI from
Taylor Jockers and Epperson during the rally.
Colton Farrar took the hill for the Rams in the fourth and allowed only a walk before being relieved by
Nolan Barbee in the fifth.
Holmes doubled again during a two-run sixth-inning. The Cru finally broke up Texas Wesleyan’s combined no-hit bid with a one-out Chris Joshlin single in the bottom of the sixth.
Christian Mendoza pitched around the base hit and a walk to preserve the shutout.
Justin Padron doubled and scored in the eighth inning to bring the score to 9-0. UMHB got on the board with an RBI single from Tim Yan in the bottom of the eighth, but the Rams got that run right back with a pair of doubles from
Justin Snider and Padron in the ninth.
Holmes led Texas Wesleyan’s 14-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Padron added a 2-for-3 day with a pair of doubles.
Vaughn (2-0) was awarded the win. Vaughn was the first in a string of eight Texas Wesleyan pitchers who combined to limit UMHB to one run on five hits while striking out 12.
Sam VanHoozer (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two in two innings of work.
The Rams will open Red River Athletic Conference Play this weekend when they travel to Hobbs, NM, for a three-game series with the University of the Southwest. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. (MST) first pitch. Sunday’s finale is also scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. local start.
