Lady Rams Drop Two in Victoria

VICTORIA, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (21-25) suffered a pair of losses at the University of Houston-Victoria tournament on Friday. The Rams fell 9-3 to NCAA Division I Texas Southern University (25-26) and 8-0 to Houston-Victoria (32-14).
 
Against Texas Southern, the Tigers got one run in the first, but Texas Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the fourth. Marissa Rangel and Raven Moreno led off the frame with back-to-back doubles. With two outs, Christina Kelley added a double, and the Rams led 2-1.
 
The Tigers came right back with four runs on three singles, two walks, and a hit batter in the second inning. Texas Wesleyan kept the pressure on with a sac fly from Kelley in the third, but the Tigers put the game away with single runs in the fourth and fifth, and two more in the sixth.
 
Ashley Hudson (4-6) took the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on ten hits in five innings pitched. Rangel and Moreno both went 2-for-4 in the loss.
 
In the evening game, the Jaguars scored in every inning on their way to the 8-0 win. In the top of the first, the Lady Rams loaded the bases with three straight singles from Rangel, Moreno, and Ashleigh Jiminez, but Emily Bergstrom got a shallow fly and back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam.
 
In the bottom of the inning, the Jaguars gave Bergstrom three runs to work with. Bergstrom retired eight in a row, including five strikeouts before Jiminez singled in the third.
 
Single runs in the second, third, and fourth, and two in the fifth, but UHV on top 8-0.
 
Bergstrom (17-4) struck out seven while scattering six hits in a five-inning effort. Ashley Tarrant (10-10) allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits in four innings of work.
 
Jiminez recorded two of Texas Wesleyan’s six hits.
 
Texas Wesleyan will meet the same two teams on Saturday. They take on Texas Southern at 9:00 a.m. and Houston-Victoria at 11:30 a.m.
