FARMER’S BRANCH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (2-5) suffered a pair of losses to open the St. Gregory’s University Tournament on Friday. The Rams fell 4-1 to Oklahoma Wesleyan University (1-4) and 9-5 in extra innings to Oklahoma Baptist University (5-1).
Against OWU, the Eagles struck first with a run in the second and then broke the game open with a three-run homer from Macy Wright in the third. While the Rams were able to match OWU’s six hits, they were unable to muster a run until a pair of Eagle errors allowed
Makelle Akin to score in the seventh inning.
Morgan Johnson (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings pitched. Courtney Carson (1-1) picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on six hits in seven innings of work.
Dakota Whittern went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss.
Against OBU, the Bison jumped ahead with a grand slam off the bat of Aubrey Branscum in the top of the third inning. The Rams came right back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three walks and a hit batter to plate four runs of their own.
An RBI double from Allison Tunnell gave the lead back to OBU in the top of the fifth, but
Hopie Perez answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.
The game remained tied at five through seven innings and cruised into extra innings. In the eighth, things went wrong for the Rams. Back-to-back walks to start the inning loaded the bases with no outs. Candace Holden and Kenna Self both drove in a pair of runs and the Bison came away with a 9-5 win.
Taylor Hodge (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings pitched. Cassidi Henderson (2-0) earned the win after allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in eight innings.
Hallie Notley went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the loss. Perez ripped her second homer of the young season while driving in a pair of runs for the Rams.
The Rams will continue play in Farmer’s Branch on Saturday. Texas Wesleyan is scheduled to play Oklahoma Christian University at 1:30 p.m. and St. Gregory’s University at 4:30 p.m.
