FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (10-16, 8-3 RRAC) swept a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader from Southwestern Assemblies of God University (4-13, 3-11) on Monday. The Lady Rams won with scores of 8-0 and 10-0.
The Lady Rams got started early in game one.
Raven Moreno led off with a single and later scored on a base-hit from
Ashleigh Jiminez.
Christina Kelley added a sac fly, and the Rams took a quick 2-0 advantage.
In the third, Texas Wesleyan loaded the bases with two down for
Hopie Perez who delivered a two-run single back up the middle. Kelley sparked another rally in the fourth with a two-out two-run homer.
Lindsay Cline,
Kali Jester, and
Marissa Rangel followed Kelley’s blast with three consecutive doubles. When the smoke cleared, the Rams had plated four more runs to extend their lead to 8-0.
Meanwhile,
Alexis Beltran (5-4) mowed down each of the first 13 Lady Lions she faced before hitting Kayla Westbrook with one out in the fifth. That spoiled Beltran’s bid for a perfect game, but she recovered with a strikeout and a grounder to complete the no-hitter. Beltran tossed 61 pitches, allowing just the one base-runner while striking out six.
The no-hitter was the first since 2010 for Texas Wesleyan. That year,
Ashley Tarrant tossed a no-hitter against Langston on March 29, and
Ashley Oldham notched a perfect game in a 4-0 win over Bacone College on April 19.
Eight Lady Rams recorded a hit in the win, while five different players drove in a run. Kelley finished 1-for-1 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jester added a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Perez was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI at the plate.
In game two, the Lions got their first hit of the day when Shannen Davis ripped a double to right with two outs in the second inning, but
Taylor Hodge promptly induced an inning-ending pop-up. In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Rams loaded the bases with three straight bases on balls. Moreno,
Makelle Akin and Rangel started the merry-go-round with three straight RBI singles. After Kelley was hit by a pitch, Jester added an RBI single to push the score to 6-0.
Perez led off the third with a triple to straight-away center field. The Rams went on to score two runs on two hits and a SAGU error to bring the score to 8-0.
In the fourth, Cline doubled and scored on a sac fly from Perez. Moreno added an RBI double to cap the scoring at 10-0.
Hodge (2-4) earned the win after allowing one hit and a walk in five innings of work. Hodge struck out seven Lady Lions.
Rangel was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Moreno and Akin each had two of Texas Wesleyan’s 10 hits in the win.
The Rams and Lions will complete their three-game series on Tuesday. Game time for the finale is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Sycamore Park.
