FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (22-17, 20-4 RRAC) notched a pair of wins to sweep Huston-Tillotson University (10-27, 8-13 RRAC) on Senior Day Saturday. The Lady Rams came back in the sixth inning to take game one 5-4 before taking game two 15-2.
The Rams got things started in the third inning when
Marissa Rangel got a two out rally started with a double left center.
Ashleigh Jiminez picked up a RBI double down the left field line.
Lindsay Cline continued the rally with another RBI double to right field to take a 2-0 lead.
Texas Wesleyan put another run on the board in the fourth after a lead-off single by
Courtney Orebaugh turned into her standing on third after a throwing error.
Ashley Seibel picked up a RBI off of a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 3-0 ball game.
Huston-Tillotson got in the board in the sixth inning after a couple of base hits and a few Lady Ram miscues in the sixth. A run scored on a bases loaded fielder’s choice play, and another run scored on a RBI single to center by Elizabeth Valderaz to make it 2-0. Another error with the bases loaded tied the game at 3-3. Tillotson took 4-3 lead after a bases loaded walk drawn by April Atkins.
Orebaugh hit a double to lead off the bottom half of the inning, and with two outs
Raven Moreno hit a RBI single to right center to tie the game at 4-4.
Makelle Akin hit a clutch double to take a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Rams held off optimistic Tillotson to hang on to the win in the good old fashioned slugfest.
Alexis Beltran (15-4) came in and got the win in 1.1 innings of relief work.
Moreno went 2 for 4 with a RBI. Jiminez went 2 for 3 with a RBI in the win. Orebaugh went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
The Lady Rams honored seven seniors in between game for their contributions to the Texas Wesleyan softball program. The class of 2012 helped the Lady Rams to 95 wins, a regular season conference championship, and two consecutive appearances in the conference tournament championship game.
In the second game, the Lady Rams had a huge nine hit, bat around inning. Seibel got the runs started with a two RBI single. Moreno picked up a RBI off of a fielder’s choice play. Akin hit a RBI single to left center, before Rangel slapped a two RBI single to left center. Orebaugh took one to deep left center off the fence for two more runs and when it was all said and done Wesleyan left the inning with a 9-0 lead.
Huston-Tillotson got a run back in the third with an Amanda Pecina RBI single after an error put runners in scoring position. Tillotson got another run on a first and third play to make a 9-2 Ram lead.
The Rams opened it up to a 14-2 lead in the fourth with a bases clearing three RBI single by Beltran. Seibel followed with a RBI single to right, and Moreno put a RBI double to left center.
The Lady Rams shut down Huston-Tillotson to take the game 15-2 and complete the series sweep.
Beltran picked up win number 15 in five innings pitched. She gave up two runs on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Beltran also went 1 for 2 with three RBI. Orebaugh went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, and Seibel went 2 for 3 with three RBI in the win.
The Lady Rams finish the regular season on a 10 game winning streak and a perfect 15-0 home record, good enough for at least the regular season co-conference championship.
The Lady Rams gear up for the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament starting May 1 in Farmer’s Branch, Texas.
