FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (1-1) split a double header against Oklahoma Wesleyan University (1-1) at Sycamore Park on Saturday. The Lady Rams dropped game one 5-3 before routing the Lady Eagles 5-0 in game two.
The softball program recognized the 2012 RRAC regular season and tournament champions with a ring ceremony before the start of the game. The 2012 Lady Rams boasted a 20-4 conference record and went on a 13 game winning streak to grab the tournament championship. Texas Wesleyan qualified for the national tournament for only the second time in program history.
In the first game the Lady Eagles got a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Allison Edwards. Oklahoma Wesleyan put two runs up in the second inning with a RBI single, and a botched first and third play that gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead. The Lady Eagles extended the lead to 5-0 in the third inning with a RBI walk, and a RBI single by Courtney Gililland.
The Lady Rams got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded wild pitch that scored Kali Jester to put the Rams on the board. Sara Sandercock made it a 3-5 game with a two RBI single into left field.
Wesleyan could not make up any more ground falling in game one 5-3.
In game two, the Lady Rams shot out of the gate. Jester struck first with a RBI single. Sara Sandercock stole home on the next play to make it a 2-0 lead with no outs. Alexis Beltran walloped a RBI double, and Kylie Sumners shot a RBI base knock into right center to give the Rams a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Beltran knocked in another run in the fourth inning to make it 5-0 that would ultimately be the final score in game two.
Beltran (1-0) tossed seven shutout innings on six hits, one walk, and four strikeouts in the win.
The Lady Rams will play in the Cowtown Classic at Gateway Park on February 15-16. Wesleyan will play Doane College at 9:00 AM before playing Graceland College at 11:00 AM on February 15, and will draw for seeding in a double elimination tournament on February 16.
