FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team took a tough 2-1 loss to Doane College (2-2) before dropping a 5-3 game to Graceland University (1-4) in the second day at the Cowtown Classic on Saturday.
Â
The Tigers took advantage of a first inning Lady Ram error to enjoy a 1-0 lead to start the game. Doane added an insurance run in the third inning that started with back to back singles. A pair of walks later in the inning gave the Tigers a free pass to home plate for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Texas Wesleyan made some threats, their biggest coming in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a leadoff double off the top of the left field fence byÂ
Amber Marlett. The Lady Rams drew a pair walks to make way for aÂ
Kendall Kizer RBI single deep enough to score one run, but not enough to tie the game. The Lady Rams just missed tying the game, slipping to Doane 2-1.
Â
Kizer went 2 for 4 with a run batted in. Marlett went 1 for 2 with a run score in the effort.Â
Morgan Johnson (0-2) picked up the tough loss. She pitched 4.2 innings, gave up one earned run on five hits and a pair of strikeouts.
Â
The Lady Rams loaded the bases in the first inning against Graceland with three consecutive two out singles, but the Yellow jackets got out of the inning to keep the game scoreless. The Jackets had an opportunity in the fourth inning with a Kristness Cruickshank single. Cheryl Iddings reached on a Lady Rams miscue to put Cruickshank at third with two away, but Wesleyan was able to get the third out to keep the game all square with no score.
Â
Graceland led off the fifth with a single by Grace Wardle and the Lady Jackets turned that into a rally. Sadiedh Greene hit a RBI single to take the lead. Â Ashley Madsen hit a fielder's choice RBI before a Cruickshank double to left field brought in two more runs. The unfortunate inning continued with a Cheryl Iddings RBI through the right side to make it a 5-0 lead after the smoke cleared.
Â
Texas Wesleyan answered in the bottom of the same inning.Â
Meagen Alvarez found base on an error, andÂ
Amber Tucker hit the gap in left center for a double to put runners in scoring position. Kizer knocked in a run with a RBI base hit to break the shutout.Â
Kali Jester put another run on the board with a sacrifice fly to deep left field to make it 5-2. Â
Â
The Lady Rams shut down the Jackets in the next two innings to try and make a comeback in the seventh inning. Kizer reached on a liner off the mitt of the shortstop Cruickshank and advanced to second on the play.Â
Chelsea Anderson knocked a laser up the middle for a RBI to cut the lead to 5-3, but Graceland shut the door, turning a double play to stop the comeback.
Â
Kizer and Anderson both went 3 for 4 with a RBI in the game. Jester went 1 for 3 with a RBI.
Â
The Lady Rams will head to Conway, AR to play in the Central Baptist Tournament starting on Friday, February 21. Wesleyan will play Columbia College at 2:00 pm before playing Lindenwood University at 4:00 pm.
