SAN ANTONIO, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (8-9) was swept in a doubleheader at Our Lady of the Lake University (8-8) at Missions Baseball Academy on Saturday. The Saints took a 7-inning game 3-2 in the opener and then won in ten innings by the same score in the nightcap.
In game one, the Saints scored three unlikely runs to lead 3-0. In the second inning, the Saints loaded the bases with one out. Darius Patton was then hit by a pitch and a balk was called on
Zach Aitken before he struck out two batters to end the inning. In the third, designated hitter Chance Evans stole home.
The Rams came back with an RBI double from
Garrett Crook and an RBI single from
Alex Gudac in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the potential tying run was thrown out at the plate on a squeeze play.
JB Martinez (3-1) earned the win after allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in 5 innings of work. Jesus Ramirez recorded his first save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning. Aitken (1-2) allowed 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7 in 6 innings pitched.
The Saints jumped ahead again in game two, this time with two unearned runs in the third inning.
Texas Wesleyan tied the game in the fifth with an RBI triple from
James Ziegler and a pinch-hit RBI double from
Blake Seaton.
The Rams loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Jordan Hackett worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground ball.
The game remained tied through the regulation seven innings and into the tenth. With one out in the bottom of the tenth, TJ Kassner singled, stole second, and scored the winning run on a single from Tyler Davis.
Hackett (3-1) tossed all 10 innings allowing 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 12.
Wade Regas (1-3) took the loss after allowing a run on 3 hits in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Ricky Hull received no decision after allowing 2 unearned runs on just 2 hits while striking out 6 in 5.2 innings.
Ryan Adam (2-4) and
James Ziegler (2-3) both had a pair of hits in the loss as the Rams outhit the Saints 7-5.
The Rams and Saints will complete their 3-game series Sunday afternoon. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
Ramblings
- This was the first ever meeting between Texas Wesleyan and OLLU on the baseball field.
- Ziegler's triple was the 12th of the season for the Rams. They currently lead the NAIA in that category and are two shy of last season's total.
