FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (11-12, 2-3 SAC) split a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader with Mid-America Christian University (11-9, 4-1 SAC) at The Ballpark in Grand Prairie on Saturday. The Evangels came from behind to take game one 6-5, and the Rams took game two 5-0 behind a complete game effort from senior lefty
Ricky Hull.
In game one, the Evangels scored first with a two-out two-run double from Reggie Lindsey in the first inning. The Rams came right back in the bottom of the first with an RBI triple from
Casey Moses, a sac fly from
James Ziegler, and an RBI single from
Alex Gudac.
Texas Wesleyan tacked on a run in the second when
Ryan Adam tripled and scored and another in the third when Gudac singled and scored.
Zach Aitken appeared to have the game well in hand, but with two outs in the fifth, Colt Pickens touched off a two-run homer to cut the Evangel's deficit down to one at 5-4. With two outs in the sixth, MACU plated two more runs and escaped with a 6-5 win.
Madison Spencer (3-2) picked up the win after allowing five runs on 10 hits in 5 innings of work. Wyatt Glasgow tossed the final two innings to record his third save of the season.
Ryan Chen (1-4) took the loss after facing two batters and allowing a run on one hit. Aitken received no decision after allowing 5 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 in 5.2 innings.
Both teams had 10 hits in the game.
Casey Moses was 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.
Ricky Hull (3-2) was outstanding in game two. He worked all seven innings, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out a career-high 10 batters.
Meanwhile the Rams' offense struck early again.
Casey Moses doubled in the first inning and then scored on a MACU throwing error. Singles from
Jonathan Bravo,
Hayden Muns, and
Dylan Measells in the second inning added up to two more runs. In the third, an RBI double from Ziegler and a sac fly Muns capped the scoring at 5-0.
Hull faced the minimum through 3.1 innings, erasing a first-inning single with a double-play. In one stretch from the second into the fourth inning, he struck out six in a row.
Chevin Noone (2-3) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits in six innings of work.
The Rams pounded out nine more hits in game two, two each from Moses, Bravo, and Measells.
The Rams and Evangels will complete their three-game SAC series at 9:40 am tomorrow morning. That game was originally scheduled for Friday, but had to be rescheduled because of rain.
Ramblings
- Triples from Moses and Adam gave the Rams 14 triples on the season, matching their total for the entire 2015 season. 14 triples currently ranks second in the NAIA just one behind Georgia Gwinett.
- Moses raised his batting average from .390 to .431 by going 5-for-6 in Saturday's doubleheader.
