Gleason Has Career Night; Lady Rams Drop Conference Opener At WBU

PLAINVIEW, TX: Nicole Gleason dropped a career high as the Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (2-5, 0-1 SAC) dropped an 88-79 bout to Wayland Baptist University (5-0, 0-1 SAC) in the conference opener at Hutcherson Center on Thursday.

Gleason crushed her previous career high of 18 points, going 7-10 from the three-point line to finish with 27.

The Flying Queens started the game on an 18-2 run through the first six minutes of the first quarter before the Rams could stop the charge. TXWES recovered and took the rest of the quarter to cut the lead to just 6 after a Lexi Burns triple.

Texas Wesleyan continued the trend into the second quarter, as Wayland saw the lead dwindle down to zero after Lorian Benjamin drained a fast break jumper to tie the game at 25-25. Falesha Fuller pulled up in the paint for a bucket to go ahead 27-25, but a 9-0 rally by WBU to close out the half gave the home team a six-point, 35-27 advantage.

Gleason splashed in a three to start the third frame, but the Flying Queens responded with a 19-7 clip to establish a 12-point lead. That lead was well maintained into the fourth quarter, despite TXWES shooting 59 percent in the last 10 minutes.

For the game, the Flying Queens held a +15 advantage in rebounding and edging the Lady Rams from the field, 49 percent to 43 percent.

Fuller poured in 12 points and had three steals in the loss. Lexi Burns posted 10 points.

The Lady Rams head to Goodwell, OK for a conference game with Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Saturday, December 2. That game scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
