GOODWELL, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (2-6, 0-2 SAC) fell victim to an 84-79 comeback at the hands of Oklahoma Panhandle State University (7-1, 1-1 SAC) at Oscar Williams Field House on Saturday.
Â
Texas Wesleyan shot a season high 45 percent from the three-point line, but OPSU was plus 19 in rebounding while shooting 46 percent from the field to outlast the Lady Rams in close fight.
Â
After a back and forth start where the two teams traded the lead, TXWES found their voice from beyond the arc to help control the game.
Nicole Gleason dropped in a three-pointer for a 9-6 lead before the Aggies took a 14-11 edge on a Monti Regier triple.
Brooke McClure responded for TXWES by draining another three to tie the game to end the opening quarter.
Â
The Lady Rams broke out to sizable lead in the second frame after torrential downpour of three-pointers.
Lexi Burns capped the 12-0 drive with another splash from downtown to take a 23-14 lead. The Rams led by as many as 12, but the Aggies trimmed the lead to a six-point, 37-31 game by the end of the half.
Â
OPSU protected home turf to start the second half with an 11-5 run to even the game at 42 apiece. The Lady Rams quickly recovered and continued to be near unstoppable from behind the arc, keeping the Aggies at bay into the fourth quarter.
Â
Texas Wesleyan tried to preserve the lead, weathering OPSU rallies through the first five minutes of the final quarter. The Aggies cut the lead to four after a traditional three-point play by Hannah Faulks before capping an 8-0 rally to make it a one-point game at 72-71. The Aggies finally broke through the Lady Ram defense enough to regain the lead, making it a 77-72 contest with 2:30 remaining in regulation. OPSU held a 4-point edge with under a minute left, but the Aggies came up with a big steal that all but ended any hopes of a TXWES comeback. OPSU ran out the clock, escaping with an 84-79 win.
Â
Burns led the way with a season high 24 points.
Falesha Fuller hit double digits in points for the fifth straight game with 14.
Karah Sicurella added 14 points.
Lorian Benjamin tacked on five rebounds and four steals in the loss. Â
