Rams Broom Lions, Push Win Streak To Nine

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball club (36-11, 16-5 SAC) completed a season sweep of Southwestern Assemblies of God University (15-32, 6-14 SAC) on Saturday. The Rams rallied to a 12-7 win in game one before cruising to an 8-3 victory in game two and have won their last nine contests.

The Lions put up a three spot in the first two innings, capped by a Josh Terry RBI dinger hit into shallow right. The Lions loaded the bases with one away, but the Ram defense stopped the rally after Kiki Menendez caught a fly ball in center and threw the runner out at third trying to advance on the tag.

The Rams quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, scoring one on a CJ Ateek groundout before Dylan Measells lifted a RBI sacrifice to center. Blake Seaton tied the game with a RBI double off the left center wall.

Kiki Menendez doubled to center to set up a Julio Ibarra RBI groundout to start the third.  Menendez would later score on a wild pitch for a 5-3 edge.

The Lions responded by retaking the lead on a four run rally in the fourth, capped by a Raul Castro three-run homer to left, making it a 7-5 ball game.

Texas Wesleyan lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning with a seven run rally. The Rams showed great patience at the plate and chased two SAGU pitchers out of the game. Menendez posted a two-run single up the middle before Aidan Laurini drove in two more with a liner through the right side. Dylan Measells put an exclamation mark on the inning with a bases clearing, three run double that was perfectly placed down the right field line. The rally gave the Rams a 12-7 advantage they would take to the house.

Evan Rogers (8-2) picked up the win in 3.2 innings of relief work. The junior from Martinsburg, WV allowed one run on two hits, gave up one walk, and sat down four. Menendez went 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Laurini went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Measells went 1 for 4 with four RBI. Six Rams recorded at least one RBI in the win.

In game two, Wade Regas (2-1) and the defense shut down the Lion offense for most of the game. TXWES gained a 3-0 lead in the third to get the offense rolling. The Rams loaded the bases before Measells drew a RBI walk. Blake Seaton capped the inning with a two-run single through the right side.

The Lions got on the board in the fifth on an inning ending play. SAGU had runners on second and third with one away when Chris Wallace vaulted a ball high into foul territory down the first base side. Julio Ibarra raced back and made the catch with his back to third. Meanwhile, both runners tagged and Ibarra planted and threw a strike to Luis Roman to get the third out at third base, but not before one run crossed the plate to get the Lions on the board.

Menendez led off the fifth with a base hit up the middle before Roman launched a double to the left center wall. Ibarra scored both runners with a punch right back to the mound and into center. Measells added one more on a solo shot to left field to make it a 6-1 Ram lead.

TXWES added two more in the sixth, starting with Hayden Muns smoking a pinch hit single into right field. Caden Williams got the run home on a RBI double to deep center, before Menendez went to left-center with a RBI double for an 8-1 advantage.

The Lions scored two in the top of the seventh, but the Rams stayed the course and got the final out at home plate on a 7-5-2 relay throw out to seal the sweep.

Regas threw six efficient innings in the win. He allowed one run (none earned), on four hits, walked none, and struck out a pair. Ibarra went 2 for 3 with two RBI, while Menendez went 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Texas Wesleyan will host Wiley College on Tuesday, April 28 in a double header starting at 3:00 p.m.
