SAC Tourney: Lady Rams top SAGU, defeated by No. 1 USAO

TXWES will face Southwestern Christian Friday at 1 p.m.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHICKASHA, OK - Texas Wesleyan Softball (25-27) broke the season-series tie with rival Southwestern Assemblies of God (27-25) Thursday to start the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament off right, winning 3-0 and the third of five meetings in 2019. In their quest for a clean sweep of pool play, the Lady Rams ran into the buzzsaw that is the 51-0 University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma Drovers in the nightcap, an 8-0 loss in five innings.

Lacy Mann pitched in the matinee with SAGU. She struck out five and allowed just five hits in her 10th win of the season. It was the fourth time in the last three years TXWES managed to blank the Lions, including a 5-0 victory on March 19 in Waxahachie earlier this season.

After a scoreless game through three innings, the Lady Rams' bats got going, led by senior Bailey Terry. Terry doubled to deep center field to start the fourth off. Mann was hit by a pitch to reach first. Kaitlyn Johnson's grounder advanced the two and with two outs, Hailey Hollingsworth delivered - a double down the left-field line, scoring Terry and Rebecca Finley, who came into run.

In the fifth, Texas Wesleyan got an insurance run. Savannah Brixey hit a lead-off triple down the line and into left field, scoring on Kylie Summers sacrifice fly.

SAGU had one last push in them in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and third, the tying run was at the plate. Second baseman Chyann Jarrett was there to catch the pop up and preserve the victory. Mann and the Lady Rams' defense left three runners stranded in the third frame thanks to a line drive to Terry at third for the third out.

In six hits, Terry was the top hitter, going 2-for-3.

Against the Drovers, the game didn't get out of hand until the third. Makenna Aycock got the start, helping to strand two USAO runners in the bottom of the first. Taylor Sutton became the second player this tourney to rocket a double down the left-field line - top 2nd - but no further offense was generated.

USAO used small ball to bleed the Lady Rams for seven runs in the third on six singles and four walks. A pitching change couldn't muster any different results, but Mann did finish out the stretch getting strikeouts swinging for all three outs of that tough third frame. The Drovers didn't have a triple or a home run for just the 12th time this season, needing every little gap and advantage they could find against the stingy Lady Rams defense.

After Day 1, the No. 5 Lady Rams victory over No. 4 SAGU was the tournaments only win by a lower seed. No. 1 USAO, No. 2 Oklahoma City and No. 3 Mid-America Christian swept, while No. 6 Oklahoma Panhandle State, No. 7 Langston and No. 8 Southwestern Christian all dropped two games.

Southwestern Christian will face TXWES Friday at 1 p.m. The winners of each pool will play for the Championship on Saturday.
