Texas Wesleyan's
Joseph Barfield have been tabbed as receive the 11th annual SABR Metroplex Carroll Beringer Award College Division Player of the Year Award by the Ernie Banks-Bobby Bragan DFW Chapter of the Society of American Baseball Research.
The prestigious collegiate baseball awards honor the memory of longtime DFW SABR president Howard Green and Carroll Beringer, former big league pitching coach who was a great supporter of college baseball in the area.
Barfield, a 6-0, 205-pound senior third baseman from Pearland, Texas, was a first team All-Sooner Athletic Conference infielder and paced the Rams in six different hitting stats; hits (74), batting average (.389), runs (70), doubles (19), homers (11), and RBI (66). He helped coach
Bobby Garza's squad finish 35-19 with several NAIA weekly national rankings and a berth in the SAC postseason tournament.
The Rams senior standout also started all 54 contests last spring, was 6-for-8 in the stolen base department and was a four-year letterman for TWU.
Barfield follows in the footsteps of earlier Howard Green winners such as future MLB players like Scott Malone of TCU, Hunter Pence of UT Arlington, Darick Hall of DBU, as well as former Carroll Beringer winners like Elvin Rodriguez of Northwood, Conner and Casey Combs of East Texas Baptist, and the only two-time recipient of either award – A.J. Liu of UT Dallas.
"The selection of this year's Green and Beringer Award winners was particularly difficult as a number area collegiate players had outstanding years, all of which is a true testament to the quality of college baseball played in the Metroplex at all levels." said Banks-Bragan SABR Chapter President Paul Rogers.
