SILOAM SPRINGS — Juliana Molina became the first Texas Wesleyan runner to win a Sooner Athletic Conference cross country title, capturing the women's 6,000-meter race in 22:17.61 to lead the Rams on Saturday.
Molina, a sophomore, pulled away to win by more than 11 seconds over Oklahoma City's Erika Pena. It marked Wesleyan's first conference championship since Jessica Davis took the Red River Athletic Conference crown in 2012.
The Oklahoma City women dominated the team standings with 23 points, placing five runners in the top eight to cruise to victory. College of the Ozarks finished second with 91 points, led by Keena Goze's fifth-place time of 23:08.06. John Brown took third with 99 points, paced by Abigail Stucker's seventh-place finish in 23:22.35.
Texas Wesleyan placed eighth in the women's team race with 193 points. Besides Molina's victory, Hannah Brooks finished 42nd in 29:06.14, Monique Hill was 49th in 35:02.75, Carla Campos placed 50th in 36:12.23 and Nataleigh Zapata was 51st in 36:12.29. Brianna Tenpenny finished 56th in 50:52.77 but did not score. Several Rams did not finish, including Lela Conley, Elizabeth Duvall, Taydem Kamjoi, Jaylah Davenport, Yvette Zapata, Aubrey Hernandez and Kamryn Boller.
In the men's 8,000-meter race, Oklahoma City claimed the team title with 39 points, led by Ayenew Devany's winning time of 24:50.91. John Brown was second with 64 points, with Samuel Burkett finishing fifth in 25:32.86. Mid-America Christian took third with 68 points, highlighted by Lucky Maila's third-place effort in 25:27.30.
Texas Wesleyan men finished fifth with 133 points. Korey Allen placed 10th in 26:07.13, Jovanni Rosas was 13th in 26:18.64, Sean Torres finished 18th in 26:38.44, Jose Hernandez was 42nd in 31:29.45 and Mikel Grenardo-Redhead placed 50th in 34:55.94. Kevin Preacher finished 51st in 35:00.43 but did not score. Roberto Jaimes, Enrique Cabrera and Kameron Shelton did not finish.
