Box Score 2 FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan University (9-9) defeated Wayland Baptist University (8-14) in both games of the Friday doubleheader to take a 2-0 series lead. The Rams are now 7-3 in conference play while the Pioneers fall to 2-8.
In game one, the Rams found themselves off to a ridiculously hot start. As the Pioneers brought the wind with them from west Texas, the Rams quickly used it to their advantage. The first inning was simple, a quick three and out for the Pioneers, followed by a quick RBI single from
Ashley Darilek to then score
Haylie Delarosa. The second inning is where the Rams caught fire, scoring eight runs in one inning to get things started. The Rams gathered RBI hits from
Kylie Barnes,
Jaelin Ornelas, and
Josie Glaze to then bring the rams lead to 9-0.
Just moments later, in the third and fourth inning, the Rams again found themselves piling it on by adding eight more runs.
Ally Hinojosa, Kaydence Crenshaw, and Darilek all joined in on the RBI hit parade as the Rams compiled 16 on the day.
Pitcher
Abbie Bird won the contest on her solid performance, pitching all five innings as well as striking out five, her season high. After today's victory, that brings her season record to 5-4.
In game two, the contest was much closer as the Rams and Pioneers had to play extra softball to decide the winner.
The Rams quickly got off to yet another fast start as they got some life from
EB Zimmerman, and just moments later, Hinojosa hits a neatly placed ball in the outfield as Zimmerman comes around to score, giving the Rams an early 2-0 lead. Just two innings later, Barnes hit a towering shot that carried all the way over right center wall, her third on the season.
The Pioneers battled back late in the game to send it to extra innings, then in the bottom of the eighth,
Reagan Avants delivered a clutch two out, RBI single to send the game into the ninth. The Pioneers answered once again, taking the lead 5-4.
Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Rams are down by one with a runner on second, Zimmerman gets on first as Delarosa advances to third. Barnes steps up and then rips a single into center field to score Delarosa and advance Zimmerman to third. Hinojosa then steps up to the plate and drives the ball above the head of the third baseman into the outfield as the Rams walk it off with a win of 6-5.
Barnes was given the win in game two's contest as she went the full nine innings to pick up her fourth win on the year.
The Rams will face the Pioneers for another doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
