FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (2-12, 1-5 RRAC) ended up on the short end of a 4-3 score in a thrilling Red River Athletic Conference match against LSU-Shreveport (6-4, 4-1) at Martin Field Saturday night.
Thiago Borges got the Rams started right, netting the only goal of the first half on an assist from Miguel Arreguin in the 31st minute.
The Pilots broke through with a goal from Leonardo Reyes in the 52nd minute. In the 59th minute Steven Bush scored to put the Pilots on top 2-1. The Rams survived the Pilots hitting the crossbar and two posts, but a second goal from Reyes put Texas Wesleyan in a daunting 3-1 hole.
Chase Richeson was unfazed. The senior midfielder scored twenty seconds later to make it a more manageable 3-2 deficit.
A yellow card to Texas Wesleyan’s Adam Pierce in the 81st minute would prove to be costly as controversy ensued two minutes later. In the 83rd minute very little contact brought out a second yellow card for Pierce and the Rams played shorthanded. In the 85th minute very little contact led to an LSUS penalty kick which Charles Tweve converted to give his team a 4-2 lead.
Ricardo Aguilera converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute, but the Rams could not complete the comeback.
The Pilots outshot the Rams 25-16 and led 7-3 in corner kicks. Gutierrez made just one save for the Rams. Lance Quini made five stops in the second half to pick up the win for LSUS.
The Rams will play their final regular season home game on Saturday, when they host University of the Southwest. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
