Rams Fall in Season Opener

Box Score

BROWNWOOD, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team suffered a season-opening loss at the hands of Howard Payne University on Friday. The Yellowjackets topped the Rams 2-1.

Texas Wesleyan outshot Howard Payne 15-9 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal, but the offense struggled to find the net. HPU goalkeeper Malcolm Framjee made eight saves, and that was enough to preserve a 2-1 win.

The game remained scoreless until the 62nd minute when Misael Carreno scored off an assist from Luis Tamez. A Cameron Jannati strike in the 81st minute put Texas Wesleyan in a daunting 2-0 hole with less than ten minutes to play.

The Rams found some hope when Cameron Stapleton scored the season’s first goal off an assist from TJ Romaguer in the 87th minute. Romaguera had the Rams only look in the final minutes, but his header went wide and the Yellowjackets held on, 2-1.

Goalkeeper Joakim Soderbaum made two saves in the loss.

“We played well in the midfield,” said head coach Gaspar Martinez. “We just struggled to score. We have to finish better.”

The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they travel to Plainview, TX, to take on Wayland Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
