FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (9-6-2, 6-3-1 RRAC) dropped a 2-0 conference match to Our Lady of the Lake University (10-5-2, 7-2-1 RRAC) at Martin Field on Monday.
It was a pretty quiet first half for both teams, as each seemed to be waiting for the other to make a mistake. Although the first shot was taken by the Saints in the sixth minute, the first credible shot was not taken until 20 minutes in, by TJ Romaguera who took a shot from the top of the box for a Nicholas Boyd save.
The only other shot on goal in the first half was taken in the 21st minute win the OLLU keeper mishandled a ball that fell at the feet of Javier Padilla, but Boyd again somehow got a hand on the ball to deter it from goal.
Despite some shaky moments in the Wesleyan back field, the defense kept the Saints from putting any shots on goal.
OLLU took three shots, none of them on goal. The Rams took five shots, two on goal. Wesleyan committed eight fouls to the Saints’ six first half fouls.
Our Lady of the Lake scored in the 50th minute when Javier Azar got the better of a defensive botch to give the Saints a 1-0 lead early in the second half.
The Saints put another one in 64th minute after a foul in the box allowed Luis Flores to score on a penalty kick to stretch the lead to 2-0.
Despite making a few runs in the last 20 minutes of the match, the Rams could not cut in the Saints lead, falling 2-0 in full time.
After a dismal first half of shooting, the Saints finished with 11 shots, six on goal. Texas Wesleyan finished with 10 shots, five on goal. Our Lady of the Lake tallied 15 fouls and three cautions in the match, while the Rams had 13 fouls and two cautions in the loss.
Dejan Milosevic (9-6-2) picked up the loss on two goals against with four saves for the Rams.
The Rams will travel to Hobbs, NM to take on the University of the Southwest on Saturday, October 29. Game time is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
