Lady Rams Split at Cowtown

Box Score - vs. Graceland
Box Score - vs. Evangel

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (4-3) split a pair of games at the Cowtown Classic on Saturday. The Lady Rams blasted Graceland University 10-4 before being bested 5-4 by Evangel University.

Against Graceland, the Yellowjacket’s leadoff hitter, Brittany Petterson took the second pitch of the game out to right field for a solo homer. The Lady Rams appeared to have tied the game in the bottom of the first. With one out and the bases loaded,Lindsay Cline hit a dribbler in front of the plate and Raven Moreno evaded a tag at the plate. The umpires initially conferred and ruled that the play would stand. They then conferred again and ruled that the ball had hit Cline in the box and was a foul ball. Cline then struck out. Tara Martinez flew out to center, and the Yellowjackets escaped the rally.

The Rams did tie the game in the second inning with a two-out double from Makelle Akin followed by an RBI single from Marissa Rangel. However, Petterson led off the third with her second home run in as many at bats.

After a Yellowjacket error extended the bottom of the third, Hopie Perez ripped a two-run triple that gave the Lady Rams a 3-2 lead. Graceland came right back and took a 4-3 lead with two runs on three hits and four walks in the fourth.

Aken led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and later scored on a sac fly from Christina Kelley. The Rams broke the game open in the fifth inning. Marissa Rangel delivered a two-run double, and Moreno brought two more in with a bunt single to push the score to 8-4.

Texas Wesleyan added two-out RBI singles from Rangel and Moreno in the sixth to account for the 10-4 final score.

Ashley Hudson (2-0) earned the win after tossing 3.2 scoreless innings. Rangel and Moreno both went 3-for-5 at the plate with a combined six runs driven in.

Against Evangel, the Crusaders scored three runs in a first-inning highlighted by a two-run homer from Danelle Billings and added an unearned run in the second to snag a quick 4-0 lead.

The Rams got on the board with two runs on two hits including an RBI single form Ashley Seibel in the sixth inning. Evangel got one of those runs back with a solo homer from Billings in the bottom of the inning.

Rangel led off the seventh with a double and Moreno followed with a home run to bring the Rams within a run at 5-4.  Haley Butler singled with one out, but the Rams were unable to score the equalizing run.

Taylor Hodge (1-2) took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out three in six innings of work. Kaitlyn Hasty earned the win after allowing four runs on 11 hits in seven innings pitched.

Moreno and Martinez both had a pair of hits in the loss.

The Lady Rams will return to action on Friday when they travel to Chickasha, OK, to take part in the University of Science & Arts tournament. Texas Wesleyan will play Avila University at 2:00 p.m. and Lubbock Christian University at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
