Lady Rams Split in Chickasha

CHICKASHA, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (5-4) split a pair of games at the University of Science & Arts tournament on Friday. The Rams came from behind to take a 7-4 win over Avila University (0-5) and nearly erased a 7-0 deficit against fifth ranked Lubbock Christian University (8-2) before falling 7-5.
 
Against Avila, the Eagles plated three runs on two singles, two walks, and an error in the third inning, and then made it 4-0 with an unearned run in the fifth.
 
The Texas Wesleyan bats came to life in the sixth. The Rams tied the game with RBI singles from Lindsay ClineTara MartinezMakelle Akin, and Marissa RangelChristina Kelley kept the offense rolling by leading off the seventh with a double. Cline later knocked in Kelley with a base-hit and Ashley Seibel added a two-run double to push the score to 7-4.
 
Ashley Tarrant picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief work. Cline went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Rangel, Kelley, and Akin each had a pair of hits in the win.
 
Against fifth ranked LCU, the Chaparrals got a two-run homer from Kim Frazier in the first, scored a run on two walks in the second, and got RBI doubles from Melissa Hartkop and Stephanie Rendon in a three-run third. An RBI single from Andrea Agree in the fourth made it 7-0.
 
Texas Wesleyan used doubles from Kelley, Cline, and Seibel to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and a double from Akin in the fifth to push the score to 7-5.
 
The Rams brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth, and put the tying run at second base in the seventh, but were unable to get any closer.
 
Tarrant (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits in three innings pitched. Rangel went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the leadoff spot for Texas Wesleyan.
 
The Lady Rams will continue tournament play on Saturday. They will take on York College at 11:00 a.m., McPherson College at 3:00 p.m., and USAO at 5:00 p.m.
