AUSTIN, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (10-9, 2-0 RRAC) swept both ends of a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader at Huston-Tillotson University on Friday. The Rams took game one 3-0 and game two 8-5.

 

Marissa Rangel led off game one with a double and scored on a Huston-Tillotson error. Tara Martinez made it 2-0 in the sixth when she touched off her second career home run.

 

Makelle Akin was hit by a pitch in the seventh and scored on a double from Kali Jester to push the score to 3-0.

 

Taylor Hodge (4-4) tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout to earn the win. Hodge allowed no walks and struck out five. Rangel went 2-for-4 at the plate in the win.

 

In game two, the Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a two-run triple from Martinez and an RBI double from Lindsay Cline in the first inning. Rangel made it 4-0 with an RBI single in the second.

 

Huston-Tillotson got on the board with an RBI single from Amanda Pecina in the bottom of the third. The Rams answered with an RBI double from Haley Butler and an RBI single from Cline in the fifth. Consecutive singles from Hodge, Chelsea Boles, and Rangel led to two more runs in the sixth.

 

HTU plated three unearned runs in the sixth and another unearned tally in the seventh, but it was not enough as Texas Wesleyan came out with an 8-5 win.

 

Ashley Tarrant (3-4) picked up the win after allowing five runs, one earned, on seven hits, while striking out seven in seven innings pitched. 

 

Butler went 3-for-3 with two doubles in the game-two win. Rangel and Cline each added a pair of hits as well.

 

The two teams will complete their three-game series with a single contest on Saturday. That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
