FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (14-9, 11-4 RRAC) swept a Red River Athletic Conference three-game series from Huston-Tillotson University (5-13, 5-10) by taking both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Rams won with scores of 5-4 and 10-0.
In game one, Texas Wesleyan outhit Huston-Tillotson 10-4. With two outs in the top of the third, Huston-Tillotson’s Michael Mesa lifted a ball down the right field line.
Eric Epperson made a diving attempt at the ball. Although Epperson’s dive ended in foul territory, the ball was ruled fair for an RBI double, giving HTU an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Rams manufactured a run with a leadoff single from
Christian Soberanes and a pair of bunts.
Epperson doubled again in the fourth and scored the go-ahead run on a base hit from
Glen Morrison. The Rams added an RBI single from Epperson and an RBI double from Morrison to push the score to 4-1 in the fifth.
An RBI single from
Joseph Lassiter in the sixth inning. HTU’s Jamal Carrington hit a ball off the foul pole in left field for a three-run homer to cap the scoring at 5-4.
Derek Vaughn (3-2) worked 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four in the win. Nolan Barbee nailed down the final out to pick up his first save of the season.
Epperson went 3-for-3 in the win. Morrison and Soberanes both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Taylor Jockers led off game two with a double to left field and scored on a two-out double from
Stephen Niedwiecki. The Rams added a sac fly from Soberanes in the second.
Huston-Tillotson put runners at first and second with no outs in the fifth, but
Colton Farrar used a strike-em-out throw-em-out double play to end the threat.
Morrison and
Justin Padron ripped back-to-back doubles in the sixth. The Rams then used three HTU throwing errors and an RBI single from Jockers to plate three more runs and push the score to 6-0.
Texas Wesleyan ended the game with four runs in an eighth inning that included three walks, two hit batters, and two RBI singles from Padron and Soberanes.
Farrar (2-2) picked up the win after working seven scoreless innings. Farrar allowed three hits and struck out seven.
Padron led the Rams at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Jockers and Morrison each had a pair of hits as well.
The Rams will return to action Monday and Tuesday with a three-game series at the University of Houston-Victoria. Monday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start with Tuesday’s finale scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
