Rams Split Doubleheader: Take Series

VICTORIA, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (16-10) split a doubleheader at the University of Houston-Victoria (10-15) on Tuesday. After taking the first game of the three-game series on Monday, the Rams took game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader 3-1 before falling 3-0 in the nightcap.
 
In game one, the Rams cracked the scoreboard first. In the sixth inning, Taylor Jockers drew a walk, advanced to second on a hit from Joseph Lassiter and scored on a base knock from Hunter Robinson.
 
The Jaguars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Kent led off and reached on an error. Jerrod Dugas plated Kent with a double into the right-center gap, and the game went to extra innings.
 
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Christian Soberanes put the Rams on top with a two-run single to centerfield.
 
Patrick Stanley (3-0) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief work. Jacob Lyons received no decision after allowing one unearned run on two hits in six innings pitched.
 
Jockers, Robinson, and Stephen Niedwiecki each had a pair of hits as Texas Wesleyan outhit Houston-Victoria 9-4.
 
In game two, the Jaguars loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but Bradley Stone ended the threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
 
A Texas Wesleyan error led to two unearned runs in the third inning, and an RBI double from David Baker pushed the score to 3-0 in the sixth.
 
Rex Garner (1-3) earned the win after allowing just three hits in six innings of work. Pete Ontiveros picked up his second save with a hitless seventh inning.
 
Stone (0-1) took the loss after allowing two unearned runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. Jockers went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss.
 
The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Alexandria, LA, to take on LSU-Alexandria. Game one of that doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
