CEDAR HILL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (13-19, 5-4 RRAC) took the finale of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series at Northwood University (27-12, 12-3) on Thursday. The Lady Rams scored two runs in the seventh to take a 3-2 win.
The Lady Rams got a leadoff double from
Ashley Hudson in the second but were unable to move her over and the game remained scoreless.
In the bottom of the second, Northwood plated the game’s first run with doubles from Emily Imken and Jillian Jones. A solo home run from Megan Schoenherr pushed the score to 2-0 in the fourth inning.
In the sixth,
Makelle Akin ripped a leadoff single. Two batters later a base hit from
Marissa Rangel put runners at second and third with one out.
Haley Butler then got the Rams on the board with a sacrifice fly.
The Knights put runners at second and third in the bottom of the sixth, but
Ashley Tarrant struck out Northwood pinch-hitter Heather Sanchez to end the inning and keep the Rams within a run.
Ashleigh Jiminez got the seventh inning started with a base-hit to centerfield. With one down,
Courtney Orebaugh pushed the tying run to second base with a pinch-hit single.
Tara Martinez followed with a base-hit to left and the Lady Rams had the bases loaded. Two batters later, the Rams were down to their final strike when an infield single from
Raven Moreno tied the game at two. Rangel then singled home Orebaugh with the go-ahead run before Northwood cut down Martinez at the plate to end the rally.
Taylor Jones singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh for Northwood, but Tarrant retired the next two hitters to complete the 3-2 win.
Tarrant (5-7) allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out nine in the win. Larisa Garcia (13-5) allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out eight in the loss.
Moreno and Rangel both went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Lady Rams.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action this weekend when they travel to Langston, OK, for an RRAC series with Langston University. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start with Sunday’s finale scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
