WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (10-7, 8-4 RRAC) swept a three-game series at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (4-15, 0-12). The Rams took Friday’s opening game 15-14 in ten innings. Texas Wesleyan then took both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader with scores of 16-7 and 19-8.
On Friday, the Rams pounded out 20 hits, but five errors aided SAGU’s 13-hit attack. The Lions held leads of 6-1 and 12-7 before the Rams led 14-12 after eight innings.
Matt Taylor led off the tenth inning with a double, advanced to third on a sac bunt from
Christian Soberanes and scored on a sac fly from
Jason Holmes.
Patrick Stanley made that run stand up in the bottom of the inning.
Stanley (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief work.
Joseph Lassiter went 5-for-6 with a double, triple, five RBI and two runs scored. In doing so he tied the Texas Wesleyan single-game record by becoming just the seventh Ram in the 44-year history of the program to collect five hits in one game.
In game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Rams scored six runs in the first and nine in the third on their way to the 16-7 win.
Justin Snider went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.
In game two the Lions led 5-3 through three innings, but the Rams scored three in the fourth and four more in the fifth innings. The Texas Wesleyan offense exploded again in the eighth (4 runs) and ninth (5 runs) innings on its way to a 19-8 win.
Hunter Robinson and Lassiter both went 5-for-6 in the win, becoming the second and third Rams in two days to notch a five-hit game.
The Rams will return home on Sunday, when they host defending NAIA National Champion and the nation’s top-ranked team Cumberland University (TN). That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field. Cumberland and Texas Wesleyan will play a second game at 3:00 p.m. on Monday as well.
