FORT WORTH, TX: Four Texas Wesleyan University pitchers combined to make a two-run first inning stand up in the finale of a three game Red River Athletic Conference series with Northwood University (31-10, 20-4 RRAC) on Sunday. The Rams (28-17, 18-9) took the game and the series 2-1.
Texas Wesleyan won a slugfest 12-10 in the series opener on Friday, before falling 3-0 on Saturday.
Drew Cavender tore through the Northwood lineup his first time through, allowing just one walk in the first three innings. Will Fontnow led off the fourth with a base-hit but was erased when Nico Taylor popped up to Niedwiecki at first base on a hit-and-run play that turned into a double play.
Eric Epperson led off the bottom of the fourth with a sharp single through the right side. Epperson stole second and advanced to third on a one-out single from
Glen Morrison. Northwood third baseman, Isaac Maturino then fielded a slow roller and turned an improbable 5-4-3 inning-ending double play.
With two outs in the sixth, Edwin Aroyo singled, stole second, and scored on a base-hit from Will Fontow.
Nolan Barbee came on in relief of Cavender and struck out Taylor to end the inning.
Northwood put the tying run at second base in the eighth inning, but
Kyle Reed came out of the bull pen and got a ground ball to end the threat.
Taylor drew a leadoff walk in the ninth inning for the Knights. Johnny Aldaz bunted Taylor to second base, and Northwood had the tying run in scoring position for a second straight inning.
Patrick Stanley made quick work of the next two hitters with a strikeout and a pop-up to wrap up the game and the seires.
Cavender (1-0) allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings of work. Stanley picked up his eleventh save of the season.
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Tarleton State University. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at LaGrave Field.
