SHREVEPORT, LA: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (31-23) was eliminated at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday. The Rams suffered an 11-0 loss at the hands of ninth ranked LSU-Shreveport.
In the final series of the regular season, the Rams took two of three from the Pilots at LaGrave Field. Jared Mortenson took the Pilots only win in that series; however, he needed 110 pitches to work five innings in which he allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out one batter. On Sunday, Mortenson (8-1) came up with eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out 13.
Drew Cavender matched Mortenson pitch for pitch in the first three innings, but LSUS used a walk and three base-hits to score three runs in the fourth inning.
A two-run triple from Kyle Pearson highlighted a three run fourth, and the Pilots got a grand slam home run from Kevin Smith during a five-run outbreak in the fifth. When the smoke cleared LSUS held an insurmountable 11-0 lead.
Taylor Jockers led the Rams at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double. Drew Cavender (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits in five innings of work.
The loss ended Texas Wesleyan’s season at 31-23, marking the team’s seventh consecutive season with at least 30 wins. The Rams also went 20-10 in conference play. The closed the regular season with RRAC series wins over then tenth ranked Northwood University and then fifth ranked LSUS to finish third in the conference standings.
