Rams Top UTB in Double OT

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a thrilling 3-2 win in double overtime against former conference rival UT-Brownsville (1-1) on Friday.

Brownsville's Carlos Acevedo put the Ocelots on top 1-0 with a goal in the 23rd minute, and that score held midway through the second half.

In the 68th minute the Kovacevic brothers came to the rescue. Ivan Kovacevic scored a free kick to knot the game at one. Just seconds later Marin Kovacevic found the net to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage. Before the 68th minute was over, Acevedo broke free and tied the game at 2-2.

The teams played even through 109 minutes. With 22 seconds remaining in the game Ivan Kovacevic lined up another free kick from the far right wing and this time netted the game-winner.

Arnold Martinez made five saves while improving to 2-0 in goal. His counterpart Sam Butler made six stops for UTB. The Ocelots held a 20-15 shot advantage and 9-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Rams will return to action on Friday when they host Bethel College. That game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
