Lady Rams come back to win Northwest Iowa Invitational

Joely Henderson ties old, new record with third-round 68

LE MARS, IA - No. 14 Texas Wesleyan Women's Golf had a week to remember at the Northwest Iowa National Invitational Tournament, claiming first place by 13 strokes - dominating the field with a third-round 293, 15 strokes better than the next closest program. The team's 293 now is the third lowest round total in program history and the squad's 902 was good enough for the second best round of golf for the Lady Rams through 54 holes ever.

The headlines came pouring in Monday when Piper Frisbie scored a double eagle and finished with a school record 68 in the second round. Joely Henderson followed Frisbie Tuesday with a program-tying 68 of her own, shooting just one hole over par with five birdies, including three straight on the course's first three holes, including a par-3, par-4 and par-5. Frisbie and Henderson join Alex Schies - who had held the 18-hole record of 68 for 1,276 days before the dynamic duo tied it twice in 24 hours - as the only Lady Rams to have ever shot four under par in a round. It helped Henderson finished tied for third, individually.

Key to TXWES' victory, the Rams stayed away from troublesome shots through the final 36 holes. After three double bogeys or worse in round one, the Lady Rams didn't tally a shot worse than a bogey, while their fiercest competitors - William Penn (finished second) and Morningside College (finished third) each shot four black eyes to the scorecard down the stretch. Penn came into the tournament ranked 16th in the country by the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll, while Morningside brought the No. 21 ranking with it.

It's the first tournament win outside of Texas for the Lady Rams since claiming the 2018 SAC Championship in Oklahoma City, and the team's first win outside of SAC territory ever.

The Rams shot an astounding -3 on par-5s and tallied two eagles and an albatross. Frisbie hit a tournament high 35 pars to finish second place, four shots behind the individual winner - Karli Kerrigan of Grand View University. Emily Hunt tallied a top 10 finish (ninth) hitting 230, while Brooke Sullivan tied for 14th just three strokes behind.

The program will take this momentum to the to the NAIA Championship Fall Preview in Oklahoma City on October 14-15.
