YPSILANTI — Texas Wesleyan University golfer Makena Junkin capped a historic season Friday by claiming the NAIA Women's Golf Individual National Championship, becoming the first women's golfer in program history to win a national title.
Junkin finished the three-round tournament at 220 (+4), carding rounds of 74 (+2), 73 (+1) and 73 (+1) to secure the championship and lead the Rams at the NAIA National Championship. Texas Wesleyan placed 10th overall with a team score of 946.
"This was an amazing week, an amazing season, for Makena," head coach Kevin Millican said. "For all of us that are familiar with her and her work ethic, we are not shocked by her achievements. On top of that, she is such a genuine and likable person, even her competitors were rallying for her and rooting for her to win. I couldn't be prouder of Makena, she is truly a deserving champion."
Natalie Miksovska tied for 54th place at 241 (+25) with rounds of 77 (+5), 79 (+7) and 85 (+13), while Jordan Pillay tied for 63rd at 244 (+28), highlighted by a second-round 78 (+6).
Sofia Gorgees Baeta tied for 80th with a 259 (+43), posting rounds of 87 (+15), 83 (+11) and 89 (+17).
Corrina Griffin posted a second-round 73 (+1) and finished with a two-round total of 154.
