RICHARDSON – Texas Wesleyan University (2-1)secured a hard-fought 5-2 victory over the University of Texas at Dallas (1-2) on Saturday, winning the doubles point and carrying momentum into singles play.
The Rams dropped the No. 3 doubles match, giving UTD an early 1-0 lead. However, Carla Arce and Zeynep Ege responded at the No. 2 doubles spot with consistent baseline rallies and well-timed net play, earning a 6-4 win to tie the match.
The decisive doubles match came at No. 1, where Paulina Hudson and Kaja Brunzlow showcased strong teamwork. Brunzlow's solid baseline play set up Hudson for dominant net finishes, while Hudson's powerful serve controlled her service games. The duo remained composed under pressure, securing a tight 7-5 victory and clinching the doubles point for Texas Wesleyan.
UTD responded in singles play, winning at No. 6 and No. 5 to take a 2-1 lead.
At No. 1 singles, Ege battled through a back-and-forth match, using her powerful forehand to dictate play. She fought through a second-set setback to win 7-5, 0-6, 10-5, tying the overall score at 2-2.
Arce followed at No. 4, displaying patience and consistency in a grueling match. After a dominant first set, she slowed in the second but regrouped to take the decisive super tiebreaker 10-5, giving the Rams a 3-2 advantage.
With Texas Wesleyan needing one more victory to seal the match, Brunzlow delivered at No. 3 singles. Using sharp angles and heavy topspin, she controlled the rallies and took the first set 6-3. Her opponent responded in the second, leveling the match with a 6-4 win. In the super tiebreaker, Brunzlow stayed aggressive and composed, closing out a 10-7
Shortly after, Hudson secured an additional win at No. 2 singles with a composed 7-5, 6-3 performance, capitalizing on key deuce points.
Texas Wesleyan (5-2) returns home to face Friends University on Friday, Feb. 28, at Arlington Tennis Center before traveling to Hardin-Simmons on Saturday, March 1.
