ROCKFORD, IL – Texas Wesleyan University competed in the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) National Tournament in Rockford, IL, showcasing their talent among the best in the country. The Rams competed among 40 schools composing of over 200 individual athletes.
The Rams brought home silver in the Coed Tournament; the team consisted of seven players that brought their A game to smash their way through the bracket. First off, they faced off with the University of Virginia in which the Rams cruised to a 4-0 victory. Next up was the University of Illinois, the Rams again made quick work of their opponent as they were victorious with a score of 3-1.
Onto the semifinal match, the Rams were pitted against the Bruins of UCLA. The Rams proved yet again to be too much as they swept the Bruins 4-0 to move onto the final. In the final match for the gold, the Rams unfortunately fell to California University 3-2.
The Coed team consisted of Senura Silva, Thiago Uieda, Nicholas Yamane, Johnathan McDonald, Derron Douglas, Karlo Franjcec, and Heitor Buscariolo.
The Rams brought home yet another silver in men's doubles as they had three pairs competing. Every pair the Rams made it to the quarterfinal as well, the only school with three quarterfinal pairs.
In the opening round,
(8) Douglas/Yamane (TXWES) defeated (23) Shawn Fong/Yitong Han (Washington) (11-5, 14-12, 11-8).
(9) Uieda/Franjcec (TXWES) defeated (18) Lak Zhang/Herman Lee (UBC) (11-4, 11-9, 11-8).
(2) McDonald/Silva (TXWES) defeated (27) Nathan Wu/Janson Chan (Cornell) (-,-,-,11-0)
In the second round,
(8) Douglas/Yamane (TXWES) defeated (16) Kevin Guo/Alexander Chasteen (Yale) (11-5, 11-5, 11-3)
(9) Uieda/Franjcec (TXWES) defeated (6) Ryan Wu/Charlie Wang (UCLA) (7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 2-11, 11-6)
(2) McDonald/Silva (TXWES) defeated (10) Alexander Wu/Andrew Wong (UCLA) (11-3, 11-7, 11-2)
In the quarterfinals,
(1) Sid Naresh/Nikhil Kumar (California) defeated (8) Douglas/Yamane (TXWES) (11-4, 9-11, 11-9, 13-11)
(4) Nathan Xu/Sushant Lebaka (Penn) defeated (9) Uieda/Franjcec (TXWES) (11-9, 11-7, 11-5)
(2) McDonald/Silva (TXWES) defeated (5) Ashwin Sankuratri/Ved Sheth (California) (11-4, 11-6, 11-5)
In the Semifinals and Finals,
(2) McDonald/Silva (TXWES) defeated (4) Nathan Xu/Sushant Lebaka (Penn) (13-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6)
(1) Sid Naresh/Nikhil Kumar (California) defeated (2) McDonald/Silva (TXWES) (12-10, 11-7, 11-3)
In the singles event, Silva brought home the bronze after falling to the number one seed in a five-game thriller that then pitted him against the four seed and resulted in his victory.
The Rams continue to prove why they're among the best in the country and look to build on this year's success.
