WGOLF:Junkin Wins Fifth National Player of the Week Honors

KANSAS CITY — Texas Wesleyan senior Makena Junkin was named the NAIA Women's Golfer of the Week on Wednesday after winning the Northwest Iowa Invitational for her 12th career collegiate victory and second win of the 2026-27 season.

Junkin, the defending NAIA individual champion, opened the tournament with a 6-under-par 66 before carding a 3-under 69 in the second round to take a commanding lead through 36 holes.

The Burleson, Texas, native closed the tournament with another strong performance, recording five birdies without a bogey to shoot a 5-under 67 and finish at 14-under par.

Junkin won the tournament by three strokes over Bellamaria Martini of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). The victory marked her 12th career collegiate title.

The honor is Junkin's first NAIA Women's Golfer of the Week award of the 2026-27 season. She earned the national weekly honor once during the 2024-25 season and three times during the 2025-26 season.

Junkin also captured the 2026 NAIA individual championship in Michigan, becoming Texas Wesleyan's first women's individual national champion.

Texas Wesleyan finished second as a team at the Northwest Iowa Invitational.

The Rams return to action Oct. 5-6 at Dalton State in Georgia.
