FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (7-2, 1-0 RRAC) took a convincing 6-1 win over Bacone College (3-3, 0-1) in their Red River Athletic Conference season opener on Thursday. Jessica Watton proved to be too much for the Warriors, taking a part in all six Lady Ram goals.
Watton got the Rams off to a hot start, scoring the game’s first goal in the third minute. Bacone’s Brianna Carbajal tied the game in the 11th minute, but Watton was just getting warmed up. The sophomore from Royal Oak, MI, scored in the 15th and 28th minutes and then assisted on a Katie Fruit goal in the 38th minute, giving the Rams a comfortable 4-1 advantage.
In the second half, Watton assisted on goals by Cara Lumpkin (68th minute) and Karissa Olson (80th minute) to cap the scoring at 6-1.
The Lady Rams outshot the Warriors 27-4 and led 5-3 in corner kicks. Katy Houchin need just one save to pick up the win. Veronica Helguera made 13 saves in the net for Bacone. Watton became the 10th Lady Ram to record three assists in a game, tying the school’s single game record. Meanwhile her nine points were just three shy of the TWU record.
“This was not our best effort tonight,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs, “but Jessica Watton came to the rescue. Having people step up when the team is struggling is huge.”
The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Texas College in another RRAC contest. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
