FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (13-3, 5-2 RRAC) set a new school record with its tenth shutout of the season during a 5-0 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (2-12, 0-7) at the 3rd Annual Dr. Elizabeth Alexander Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Thursday.
Dr. Alexander is a professor of History at Texas Wesleyan and is a breast cancer survivor who has been cancer free since 2001. Although she could not be present at the game, she imparted through a written message her thanks for the honor, and stressed the importance of opportunities like Thursday’s game to support the efforts to find a cure.
The shutout was the tenth of the season for the Lady Rams, breaking the previous school record set in 2009. Goalkeeper
Aubree Gallego did not need a single save to record her ninth shutout of the year which ties the school record. “The back line and Aubrey have been phenomenal all year,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “We’ve had a lot of really good defensive lines and goalkeepers here, and they deserve to be one of the very best.”
Kaeley Albus, in her first game back off of an injury, handled most of the offense for the Lady Rams. In the 13th minute, Albus found
Karissa Olson for a score. Seven minutes later, she knocked in a rebound off her own shot to push the score to 2-0.
In the 58th minute, Albus found
Jessica Watton for her 20th goal of the season. In the 66th minute, Albus assisted on a goal from
Whitney Chappell. In the 73rd minute it appeared the Rams had pushed the score to 5-0, but the referee disallowed the goal, calling a foul and ruling that the Rams did not have the advantage. Texas Wesleyan got that goal back in the 76th minute when
Brianna Wilson scored unassisted.
Albus finished with a goal and three assists, tying the school record for assists in a single game. She is the twelfth Lady Ram to accomplish that feat.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Lions 32-2 including 15-0 on goal. The Rams also led 6-0 in corner kick opportunities. An overaggressive SAGU squad was shown six of nine yellow cards in the contest.
“I was disappointed in their aggressive approach,” Gibbs said. “The officials did not manage the situation, but I thought our girls did a great job of just playing good soccer, putting goals on the board, and coming away with another shutout.”
The Lady Rams will return to action in the regular season finale on Saturday, when they host Huston-Tillotson University. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
