FORT WORTH, TX: Sixth seeded Bacone College (7-8-2) shocked the winningest team in Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer history at Martin Field on Saturday. In Red River Athletic Conference quarterfinal action, the Warriors played the Rams (15-3-1) to a 1-1 draw and then advanced on penalty kicks 4-2.
In the 18th minute, Bacone’s Jessica Harper played a corner kick and Jessica Flores put BC’s first shot of the day inside the back post for a quick 1-0 lead. That goal snapped a streak of five consecutive shutouts (472 minutes) for Texas Wesleyan. The Rams had the better of the play for the remainder of the period, outshooting the Warriors 16-4 and leading 6-2 in corner kick opportunities.
In the 43rd minute,
Paige Wheaton played a corner kick into the box, and
Jessica Watton headed in her 24th strike of the season to level the game at one. With eleven seconds remaining in the half, Wheaton took another corner kick but BC goalkeeper Veronica Helguera was able to save
Kayla Mason's header.
The second half brought more of the same action. Texas Wesleyan outshot the Warriors 10-5 in the period, but Helguera frustrated the Rams with seven second half saves.
The score remained tied deep into the second overtime period. With 5:47 to play, Watton was taken down less than ten feet from goal, but no call was made. With 40 seconds on the clock Watton broke free again, but her shot from the near right wing hit the crossbar and the game moved to penalty kicks.
Helguera came up with two huge saves against Texas Wesleyan’s first two shots.
Aubree Gallego stopped BC’s third shot to keep the Lady Rams’ hopes alive, but Jennifer Contreras found the net on BC’s fifth attempt to seal the win 4-2.
For the game, Texas Wesleyan led 32-15 in shots, 12-6 in shots on goal, and 8-5 in corner kicks. Helguera made 11 saves for the Warriors, while Gallego made five stops for the Rams.
“This was a shocking loss and a hard way to end a great year,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “We deserved better tonight.”
The loss ended a record setting season for the Rams. Texas Wesleyan began the season with a school record seven-game winning streak. Their 15 wins mark another school record, while their three losses were the fewest in school history. The Lady Rams also shattered school records with 12 shutouts and 0.56 goals against per game.
Erin Bethany etched her name into the record book, tying
Jacqueline Wittman's school mark with 75 games played while setting new marks with 75 games started and 53 wins. Gallego set new school marks with 11 shutouts and a 0.58 GAA. Watton’s 24 goals were the second most all-time.
