FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (29-19) took a 7-6 win in 10 innings over the University of Houston-Victoria (24-22) on Saturday.
Texas Wesleyan’s
Derek Vaughn and Houston-Victoria’s Broc Haymon breezed through the first three innings, each facing the minimum nine batters. Vaughn allowed a second inning walk before picking Ryan Gilbert off of first base. Haymon meanwhile was perfect on his first trip through the TWU lineup.
Texas Wesleyan got to Haymon in a big way on their second time at bat. Eight Rams batted in the fourth inning.
Taylor Jockers delivered the first hit of the day when he led off the rally with a single to right field. With Jockers in motion at first base,
Joseph Lassiter followed with an infield single. With two down in the inning,
Justin Snider came through with a two-run base-hit up the middle.
Jason Holmes and
Eric Epperson added back-to-back RBI doubles to push Texas Wesleyan’s advantage to 4-0.
Gilbert broke up Vaughn’s no-hit bid when he singled with one out in the fifth. Chance Marek followed with a base-hit to center. With two outs, Brandon Bohanon delivered a two-run single up the middle to cut the lead to 4-2.
UHV tied the game in the sixth with an RBI double from John Longoria and an RBI single from Cory Hulsey. In the seventh, Ryan Suescan put the Jaguars on top for the first time with a two-out RBI single. Longoria followed with an RBI single and UHV led 6-4.
The Rams were unable to chase Haymon from the contest until the ninth inning. After getting a quick out, Haymon walked Holmes and then hit Epperson with his 129
th pitch of the day. Haymon was then lifted in favor of Pete Ontiveros. With two outs
Patrick Melton pinch-hit and singled through the right side to load the bases for Jockers. Jockers delivered a game tying single through the right side, but he ran into an out at second base and the game went to extra innings.
In the bottom of the tenth
Christian Soberanes doubled down the left field line with one out.
Hunter Robinson followed with a base-hit that took a nasty hop over the third baseman, putting runners at the corners. Soberanes then came home on a safety squeeze bunt from Snider.
Vaughn struck out nine in 5.1 innings of work.
Patrick Stanley (4-1) got the win by recording the final two outs of the tenth inning.
For UHV, Haymon went 8.1 and struck out 10. Ontiveros got the loss after allowing one run on four hits in an inning of work.
The Rams and Jaguars will complete their three-game series on Sunday, with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
