FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (5-5-2, 2-2-1 RRAC) powered past LSU-Shreveport (7-4, 4-1 RRAC) with a late goal to win 1-0 at Martin Field on Saturday.
The Lady Rams supported breast cancer awareness with the fourth annual Dr. Elizabeth Alexander Breast Cancer Awareness match. Dr. Alexander is a professor of history at Texas Wesleyan and a breast cancer survivor since 2001. The women’s soccer team made a 500 dollar donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Dr. Alexander’s name.
The Lady Rams and Lady Pilots battled the elements on Saturday night, with temperatures in the fifties and light drizzle soaking it just enough to make everything slippery. This proved to make the two teams play cautiously throughout the first half, as neither team could hold on to an advantage.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan got off to a slow start. Fortunately, the Lady Pilots were not able to capitalize on the few opportunities they had.
The two teams had a few dangerous moments near goal, but were unable to produce any points out of it.
Texas Wesleyan started knocking on the door late in the second half, and finally in the 85th minute, Leah Valtman found Shrareh Asadi who put a shot on goal to beat the keeper. This put the Lady Rams up 1-0 with just over five minutes to kill.
The Lady Pilots failed to make a comeback as Wesleyan held on to win in regulation.
“We played hard again tonight and were the better team,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “Tonight we were able to break through with the win. LSU-S is a great team that is coached well. This was a huge win for us. Dr. Alexander is a real inspiration to our players, coaches, and the entire Wesleyan community. We are honored to have her lend her name to our breast cancer awareness game.”
Wesleyan will continue their home stand with a match against conference foe Wiley College on Thursday, October 11 starting at 7:30 p.m.
