FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (5-1-2, 0-1-1 SAC) suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday. Oklahoma Baptist University (4-4, 2-0) escaped with a 2-1 double overtime win at Martin Field.
In the opening half,
Nikki Lockwood made three saves while OBU's Lauren Dobratz made five stops to keep the game scoreless.
Alexis Michaelkovich had two good looks early in the second half. In the 50th minute, Dobratz made a terrific stop of a Michaelkovic shot and six minutes later Dobratz stopped another bomb from Michaelkovic.
In the 62nd minute Michaelkovic played a ball into the box, and
Shrareh Asadi headed the ball into the back of the net. The lead was short-lived however. Four minutes later OBU's Allie Preston drew a foul in the box, and Nicol Lagos converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.
The game looked destined to end in a double overtime draw. However, in the 107th minute a Texas Wesleyan defender attempted to clear a ball from the box. The ball ricocheted off of OBU's Zoe Bauerschmidt and into the net for the game-winning goal.
For the game, Texas Wesleyan outshot Oklahoma Baptist 17-13 and led 5-2 in corner kicks. Dobratz made 12 saves for the Bison, while Lockwood (5-1-2) finished with seven saves in her first collegiate loss.
Head coach Josh Gibbs was disappointed with the loss. "I thought we were the better team, especially in the second half and into overtime," Gibbs said. "We just lacked an edge in the final third tonight. The good news is that this is an incredibly strong group of girls, and I am certain that they will rebound from this as we shift our focus to Saint Gregory's."
The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Shawnee, OK, to take on Saint Gregory's University. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
