Lady Rams Drop Heartbreaker

Box Score
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK:  A gutty second half comeback went for naught when the Mid-America Christian University women's soccer team (8-4, 2-3 SAC) took a 3-2 overtime win over Texas Wesleyan University (8-2-2, 2-2-1 SAC) on Wednesday.

Heavy rain in Oklahoma City moved the game, originally scheduled for Tuesday, to the artificial surface at Newcastle High School.

Chelsea Swisher almost immediately staked MACU to a lead.  Swisher scored off an assist from Kaci Power just 2:48 into the game.  Just before the half, Ciara Mitchell hit Swisher again to make it a 2-0 lead.

In the 63rd minute, Zamora Bell gave the Rams life with an unassisted goal.  Then in the 76th minute Jessica Watton played a ball to Alexis Michaelkovich who knotted the game at 2-2.

The game moved into overtime and MACU struck quickly.  Just 2:42 into the extra frame, Swisher assisted Mitchell on the game-winner.

For the game, the Evangels outshot the Rams 17-11.  Texas Wesleyan led 4-1 in corner kicks and enjoyed a 10-4 foul count.  Nikki Lockwood (7-2-2) made six saves in the loss.  Kenady Maynard made two saves in a scoreless first half for the Evangels; however, Kaitlyn Whitten earned the win by working the final 47:42.

"I was proud of the players for fighting back with real heart in the second half," said head coach Josh Gibbs, "but we can't dig ourselves a 2-0 hole and expect good things to happen.  We were not ready to go from the start today, and I have to do a better job of making sure the players are prepared from the opening whistle."

The Lady Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Chickasha, OK, to take on the University of Science and Arts.  That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
