OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (12-5-2) suffered a 2-0 loss at 18th ranked Oklahoma City University (15-4) in semifinal action of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday.
With the game time temperature near freezing, the Lady Rams came out as the aggressor, but two offside calls slowed the attack.
In the 14th minute,
Alexis Michaelkovich, coming off a hat trick in the Rams' quarterfinal win at Oklahoma Baptist, was injured and the Rams played on without the reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week. Three minutes later the SAC Offensive Player of the Year, Meghan McMahon made her presence felt. Allie Glazner played a free kick from midfield to McMahon who was initially called offside, but the call was reversed and McMahon's goal was allowed.
OCU outshot Texas Wesleyan 8-3 in the first half, but the score held at just 1-0 at the break.
In the 72nd minute, the Rams thought they had tied the game, but the goal was negated by an offside call. Four minutes later OCU's Ashleigh Story played another free kick from midfield, and this time Allison Worsham gave the Stars a 2-0 advantage.
The Rams continued to attack and appeared to have gotten on the board in the 88th minute, but that goal was called back for offside as well.
Alissa Reed and Ashley Bechtold combined to make three saves in the shutout for OCU.
Nikki Lockwood made four saves for Texas Wesleyan.
"I'm proud of our girls," commented head coach Josh Gibbs. "We were shorthanded, but they kept fighting to the bitter end. It is so sad to say goodbye to two of the greats in Jess [
Watton] and Leah [
Valtman]. They are giants in this program and it has been a true honor to be their coach."
Watton and Valtman have led the Lady Rams to 66 wins over the last five seasons. Watton is arguably the greatest offensive player in program history. She ranks second all-time at Texas Wesleyan with 62 goals and 149 points, while her 25 career assists are a program record. Valtman meanwhile anchored some of the greatest defenses the program has ever seen including this year's team which set new school records with 16 goals allowed, a goals against average of 0.81 and tied the school record with nine shutouts.
