Rams Slam SAGU on Senior Day

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (12-5-1, 6-4 SAC) took a 4-1 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-14, 0-9 SAC) on Senior Day at Martin Field on Saturday.

Texas Wesleyan honored four seniors for their hard work and contributions before the match. The class of 2013 is responsible for 35 wins and the first NAIA National Tournament appearance is program history.

David Hagen has notched four goals and an assist in his first season with the Rams to total 27 goals and 16 assists in his collegiate career.

Hector Vargas is in his third season with the Rams.  He has played 53 games and made 42 starts in the midfield.

In his four year career, Ivan Kovacevic has distinguished himself as perhaps the greatest offensive player in program history.  Kovacevic is the school's career record holder with 108 points and 28 assists, while his 40 goals rank second all-time.

Ross DeWet has reached the national tournament in each of his three seasons, including last year's run at Texas Wesleyan.  His Tyler Junior College team won the NJCAA National Title in 2010 and finished third in 2011.  DeWett holds an astonishing career record of 59-13-9.

On Saturday, the Lions bent in the first 15 minutes, but did not break despite the Rams working mostly in Lion territory with six shots.

Denis Ushakov got a great look, but was turned away by Cesar Espana with a good save.  Espana could not contain Max O'Shea though, as the Ushakov shot set up O'Shea to put the ball in the net in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead.

The Rams took five more shots in the half, one very close from Hagen who hit a laser that hit the crossbar, but the score remained 1-0 at the intermission.

The Rams got some cushion in the second half.  After Vargas was fouled in the box in the 64th minute, DeWet converted the ensuing penalty kick for a senior day strike.  Kovacevic was quick to get in on the action, collecting a pass from Hagen in the 71st minute and pushing the score to 3-0.  Ivan's brother, Marin Kovacevic found Abdi Mahdi in the 81st minute to put the game well out of reach at 4-0.

SAGU's Robert Ambrosie scored on a penalty kick with seven seconds to play to break up the shutout.

For the game, the Rams outshot the Lions 24-3 and led 8-1 in corner kicks.  Arturo Sanchez made two saves for Texas Wesleyan while Espana made seven stops for SAGU.

The Rams will now wait to see how the seeding shakes out for the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.  The Rams will host a quarterfinal match on November 8.  The opponent and time for that game are TBA.
