Lady Rams Shutout SAGU on Senior Day

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (11-4-2, 5-4-1 SAC) took a 2-0 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Senior Day at Martin Field on Saturday.

Before the match, Texas Wesleyan honored two seniors for their hard work and accomplishments during their Wesleyan tenures. Leah Valtman and Jessica Watton played in their final regular season home match. The pair has helped the women's soccer program rack up a remarkable record of 65-25-3.

Valtman, a two-time All-Conference defender from Grapevine, TX, led the defense to school records with 12 shutouts, 11 goals against, and a goals against average of 0.58 in her sophomore year. This season she has helped the defense to ten shutouts and a goals against average of .078.

Watton is a two-time All-Conference selection, the 2011 Red River Offensive Player of the Year, and an All-American Honorable Mention selection. The forward from Royal Oaks, MI, is perhaps the most prolific offensive player in program history.  With an assist in the match today, she broke the school record for assists in a career with 23. She also ranks second all-time with 61 career goals and 145 points.

"Leah and Jess are very special players," commented head coach Josh Gibbs.  "Two of the best this program has ever seen, and as great as they are as players, they are even better people.  Their passion, desire, and sheer will to win will echo in this program for years to come.  I am humbled and honored to be their coach.  I just hope we can keep their senior season going for a while!"

The Lady Lions backline did a decent job of protecting the goal against the forceful Lady Rams offense to start the first half, and Wesleyan did not get a shot on goal for 25 minutes.  Watton finally made the keeper work with a sliding shot in the box, but the ball was collected by Haley Shingleton.

Watton put the Lady Rams on the board in the 35th minute after a play in from Zamora Bell.

The Lady Lions threatened late in the half, as Amber Belisle took a shot 50 feet away that gave Nikki Lockwood a bit of trouble because the ball was lost in the sun. Lockwood knocked it away in the direction of Amy Lambdin who fired away, but Lockwood picked up another save to keep SAGU at nil.

The Lady Rams played mistake free soccer in the second half taking shots early and often.  In the 74th minute, Watton flicked the ball to Bell for the second goal of the match and a 2-0 Wesleyan lead.

For the game, Texas Wesleyan outshot SAGU 24-5 including a 9-3 count in shots on goal.  Shingleton finished with seven saves for the Lions, while Lockwood made three stops for the Rams.

Texas Wesleyan will now wait to see how the seeding for the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament shakes out.  The Lady Rams will travel for their quarterfinal match on November 9.  Location, opponent, and time for that game are TBA.
