SEARCY, AR: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (6-0-1) traveled to Searcy, AR, to take on NCAA Division II Harding University (0-1-2) on Saturday. The Rams escaped a talented opponent and some questionable referring still undefeated after a 0-0 draw.
Texas Wesleyan entered Saturday's action having received eight cautions in their first six games. Against Harding, the Rams were shown seven cards including two reds.
In the opening half, the Rams were whistled for 12 fouls and four cards. In the 36th minute,
Ivan Kovacevic was shown a yellow and a red card and the Rams played the remainder of the contest a man down and lacking the NAIA's fifth leading point scorer.
The tone of the game did not change in the second half. Just under two minutes into the period
Ross DeWet was tagged with a yellow card. Even a man down, the Rams managed to outshoot the Bison17-10 through regulation. However, the game remained scoreless and overtime ensued.
With four minutes to play in the second overtime period
Abdi Mahdi was shown a red card and the Rams found themselves short two men. The Rams' defense allowed just one shot in those last four minutes to preserve the 0-0 tie.
For the game, Texas Wesleyan outshot Harding 26-12.
Arnold Martinez (5-0-1) recorded three saves in his fourth shutout of the season. Harding's Seth Peterson came up with nine stops in the opposing net.
The contest was Texas Wesleyan's third in a four-day span. The Rams can now catch their breath before hosting Lubbock Christian University next Saturday. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
