Box Score FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Men's Soccer (4-14. 3-6 SAC) finished the regular season with a 3-1 loss to Wayland Baptist (9-3-3, 5-3-1 SAC) on Senior Night at Martin Field.
The first half put the Rams in a 2-0 hole, but Texas Wesleyan once again clawed back and played better in the second half.
Julius Williams scored in the 74 minute, assisted by
Juan Rey, to give TXWES some positive momentum heading into the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Rams are slotted in the No. 7 spot for the tourney and will travel to Mid-America Christian (the No. 2 seed) Friday at 2 p.m. to try and pull the upset. TXWES just saw the Evangels four days ago in a 3-0 loss, but this MACU bunch hasn't played the favorite role before. The Evangels finished fifth in the conference in 2018, fifth in 2017 and eighth in 2016. Texas Wesleyan has latched on to the seventh spot three of the last four years.Â
TXWES played Wayland pretty even Tuesday night, getting out-shot by three, 18-15, getting off the same number of shots as the Pioneers (six) in the second half. Williams got seven of the team's 15 looks, putting four on target. The fog rolled in down the stretch, casting a glow onto a field that had been cut and carved by cleats like a Halloween pumpkin after rains and mist fell earlier in the day.
Barraza, the team's lone senior, put both of his shots on target. Barraza has scored 18 goals in his 28 games in a Ram uniform, contributing four assists along the way. He's put 36 of 83 shots on target and was named to the All-SAC second team in 2018.
