About Head Coach Cole Sweeter
Cole Sweetser is entering his fifth season (2021) as head coach of the men's soccer program.
Last season (2020) Sweetser helped guide his athletes on and off the field through the COVID-19 pandemic. The team garnered 4 wins including a 3-1 win over SAC rival Southwestern Assemblies of God in the season finale. Earlier in the season the same two teams had battled into double-overtime during a non-conference tilt.
Mateja Jovanovic lifted the Rams to victory in that contest when he scored with just 33 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. Jovanovic, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia was named 2nd-team All-SAC after tallying 8 goals and 2 assists as well as 3 multi-goal games. Nine Rams were named Academic All-SAC, while
Robinson Mugisha was named an SAC Scholar-Athlete. In addition, the team was named an SAC Scholar-Team with a 3.01 cumulative GPA.
As head coach, Sweetser has produced four All-Conference selections, three NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 19 Academic All-Conference selections and three SAC Scholar-Athletes.
Sweetser served as an assistant coach for two season prior to rising to the position of head coach. In his two seasons as an assistant, the Rams posted 15 wins and produced two All-SAC selections, 29 members of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, 15 Academic All-Conference selections, and five NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Sweetser began his coaching career in Durango, CO, where he was named Coach of the Year as a Club coach in 2012 and 2013. He was also named Colorado Developmental Coach of the Year in 2013 by Colorado Youth Soccer. In Durango, he served as Assistant Director of Coaching and was a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, Fort Lewis College. Sweetser later served as an Assistant Coach for Colorado Mesa University and Technical Director for Western Slope Premier in Grand Junction, CO. While at CMU, he helped the Mavericks to their first ever conference championship and an NCAA Division II final four appearance.
A Texas native, Sweetser had an outstanding collegiate playing career at Fort Lewis under the direction of Head Coach Jeremy Gunn, who has since led Stanford to back-to-back NCAA Division I National Championships (2015, 2016), making him one of only four coaches to win national titles at both the NCAA Division I and Division II levels.
Sweetser helped lead Fort Lewis to its first ever NCAA Division II National Championship (2005) with a record of 22-0-1. He was named 1st-team All-American that season, and at the time of his graduation, he ranked second in both school and conference history in career points (136) and goals (58). Sweetser is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Soccer All-Century Team as well as the Fort Lewis College All-Sport All-Century Team.
